Movie Review
Dinesh Babu who was earlier known for many of his sensitive films has now turned film direction into some sort of a factory job. How can you explain a film like Mr. Painter to be directed by this maker who has given some wonderful films like Suprabhatha, Hendthige Helbedi, Amrutha Varshini and Abhi.
Mr. Painter is the latest film to join the list of Babu's films made under fifteen days, shot almost in the same locations and do not have any colour to it. For a director like Babu, getting big names into his films is not difficult and that is why you see artists like Yogeesh, Rangayana Raghu, Sharan, Ravishankar working in this film. But one thing is that these artists are not used properly and all of them except Sharan end up doing precious little to save the film. Yogeesh is in the film only for box office considerations and he comes only in the second half of the film being featured in one song, a fight and a few sequences.
Mr. Painter is a terribly disappointing film from Dinesh Babu who is capable of delivering very good films. Whatever may be his compulsions, but Babu should take care not to spoil his reputation by making these type of silly films which could have been appropriately titled as Mr. Torture. Perhaps some producers were inspired with the success of Mr. Garagasa which was made in a shoe string budget and have turned into fly by night operators. But these sort of quick films made without any rhyme and reason will certainly drive away the audience from Kannada films which is now picking up with the success of some recent releases.
The other negative factors of the film include that the film's narration drags from the beginning and the music is very dull. Surprising since Shankar delivered good music in the film Orata, I Love You.
The story of the film is not anything new. Dinesh Babu has written many stories about undivided families in many of his previous films like Akasha Gange and others. Two painters Rangayana Raghu and Sharan enter this house just before the marriage of a young girl in the house. The girl is in love with another person but is afraid to reveal this secret. The family is also facing some internal differences and financial problems as the elder in the family loses money in shares. The painters would try to find solutions to all these problems.
Despite getting a mass image, the film's hero (Or is it guest artist) Yogeesh is found wanting in the acting department. Nothing special could be written about Rangayana Raghu in this film, but Sharan is a treat when he speaks in the Uttara Kannada accent. Ravi Shankar is capable of performing better roles as an actor. The Veteran artists have filled the bill. The film's heroine Ramaneethu Chowdhary has been wasted in the film.
Mr.Painter is a film made with little passion but with a sense of urgency and desire to make a fast buck. Kannada film industry is now witnessing the rise of some young talented directors hose films look more attractive and committed. Dinesh Babu who is certainly not less on competence may have to learn lessons afresh.
Watch Mr. Painter for Sharan, but you should have lot of patience.
